Be Alert: Watch for W-2 Scams

Just a brief public service announcement for employers: January 31, 2017 (today) is the deadline to file W-2s for calendar year 2016 with the IRS, and to provide them to your employees. Despite this fact, W-2 phishing scams will continue to surge for another 6 weeks or so if last spring is any indication.

Watch for W-2 Scams

If you receive an emailed request for employee tax data – even if it appears to be from the IRS or a company executive – there’s a very good chance it is fraud. This is all the more likely if that request comes after today. Take a minute to verify the request is legitimate (with someone other than the requester) before replying to the requester.
