A New Craigslist Scam Involving Google Checkout

Allison here, with AllClear ID. Awhile back we warned of a scam targeting vehicle shoppers on Edmunds. Now those of you thinking of making purchase on Craigslist anytime soon need to exercise caution. There is a scam going on involving Google Checkout and those who wish to make purchases out of state. If you fall for it, the scammer ends up with your identity including name and address, plus your money, while you get nothing in return.

How this Internet scam works is that the scammer lists something on Craigslist, commonly a motor vehicle like an ATV, a pickup truck, or a small vehicle like a Nissan Altima or a motorcycle. One thing to notice is that the scammer will sell the item well below market value, and will have some story as to why they are selling it so cheaply. Once you indicate interest, the scammer will tell you that the vehicle is ready for shipping to your address from an out-of-state location. All you have to do is give the scammer your name and shipping address, and then everything will be set up via Google Checkout.

If you ask to see the vehicle, motorcycle etc., the scammer will say that it’s already in storage ready to be shipped, so you can’t meet them or take a look at it. Sometimes, the scammer will say that they are on a military base about to be deployed, which is why they need to sell quickly or why they cannot meet. All you have to do is provide the information to Google Checkout, and then you will have a quick grace period in which to test the vehicle and to make a final decision. In the meantime, Google Checkout will hang on to the money until you give Google Checkout the go ahead.

The entire story is a scam. Once you put the money into Google Checkout, you won’t see it again. Keep in mind that Google Checkout is a legitimate service; however, these scammers are using a dummy Google Checkout to get their money. Online threads show that this scam has been going on for over 18 months, in states all over the country, and it is still going right now. Here are a few warning signs to watch out for if you’re planning to make a purchase of an ATV, tractor, motorcycle, car, or any other vehicle via Craigslist:

  • If you are unable to take a look at the vehicle before purchase
  • If the vehicle is being sold below market value
  • If they ask for you to pay before you even have the vehicle, or have seen it
  • There’s a grace period for you to test the care and make a decision
  • Vehicle is located in a state different from the one advertised in on Craigslist

If you are in the market for a vehicle, make an in-state purchase, or avoid doing it on Craigslist all together. If you find an ad and the correspondence you have seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

    1. Yea I have someone trying to scam me now about a 07 ninja bike selling for 1000 worth 4k I knew it was to good to be true glad I looked into it thanks guys

  1. I almost fell for it the other day, red flags came up when I asked to come see the item in person and wouldn’t get a response. I have emails from the person explaining how Google Checkout was going to work, thanks for informing of scams.

    1. Niel,

Great question! Reporting it can help increase awareness for the possible scammer, and they do have fraud detection on their website so you’re info should be kept safe. You can report this problem to Google here. But in the case that it wasn’t kept safe, we can get you in touch with our Support staff here. Thanks, and feel free to ask any other questions you might have.

      –Alyssa

  2. Thank you! How can we let others know as we are in the middle of exactly what you have described. The item is a grand horse trailer, seller is in London, cannot meet us in Texas. They want to use Google Checkout. We so appreciate your detailed accounting and without being able to see the trailer we are not purchasing. We have asked many times to have the address of the trailer and she says it is packaged for shipping and will not share the physical address. Thank you sincerely and wonder how we may let others know?
    Sincerely,
    Gene Graves

    1. Gene,

The best way is to contact Google Checkout and let them know that you have found a scammer. They have a support page here and a fraud page here. It’s great you realized that it’s a scam just in time! The best way to let others know is by notifying Google themselves and to continue sharing your story. Thanks for reaching out and if you have any other questions, feel free to let us know!

  3. We figured out that this Emily Cormack, flight attendant, wanting to sell a 2010 Harley trike to settle her divorce was too good to be true. My husband and I have been all over the internet trying to prove to ourselves that this is a scam. Once we came to this sight we realized it must be. Same type of situation. We are in AZ, the bike is in MO at the shippers site. She is getting a divorce because her hours are too long and her husband didnt like it. Anyway, she did send the VIN which checked out except that the bike was bought in 2010 with 1800 miles on it and the ad said there are only 2,000 miles…first alert. I tried to track the VIN to a name but could not. I googled her name all over the US and only came up with 4. Buyer be aware of “too good to be true” I feel bad for all the people that did take the bait.

    1. Denise T.,

Thanks for sharing your story with us! It’s always great to hear that we can help others identify the scams out there. If you’d like to help further, you can report the problem to Google here. Any little bit helps. Feel free to ask us any other questions, or contact our support line at 1.855.434.8077.

  4. I also as many others were searching for a car for my daughter, the more I looked at the pictures of the autos the more they looked like new cars, so I spoke to a friend who said it was a scam, so as I had more interest in other autos I was receiving the same type of stories but from different emails, I was really convinced this was a scam, none of them listed phone numbers, I’m also glad I did research before throwing money away..And I will shop locally on craigslist.

  5. Thank you for the information as I was ready to proceed with the purchase of a Harley Davidson motorcycle. The woman claimed to be in Alaska, in the Air Force, selling a 2006 Fatboy at well below value, and claiming that the $$ was for a sick sister. She wouldn’t send the VIN, scan of the Title or any verifiable documents.

In other words, this sounded too good to be true.

  6. Yep…researched this after I got this when interested in a truck on Craigslist…

    “Hi again,

Thank you for your words. I decided to explain you how the transaction works in a single mail, so read this email carefully in order for you to understand the transaction.

We will use only Google Checkout to close the transaction. The truck is in Google custody at their shipping company sealed with all the papers(title signed by me, ownership, insurance papers etc) in Montgomery, AL. The shipping is free because i supposed to ship the truck to another buyer, then he told me that he doesn’t have money to pay for it. He already paid the shipping charges. This way we can both be protected and insured. The payment will be handled by Google Checkout and they will keep the money on hold until the end of the testing period. You will receive the truck in maximum 48 hours and you will have the chance to inspect it for 7 days.During the inspection period you can test the truck or go with it at your local mechanic for inspection .The truck will be delivered directly to your requested address as soon as Google Checkout will have the payment confirmation from you. In case you won`t be satisfied, you can cancel the transaction and ship the truck back on my expense.
Email me your full name and full shipping address so I can notify Google Checkout that you are selected as my buyer and they will contact you.
    Thanks”

And they said they were selling it because their son died 2 months previous and could not stand to look at the truck again. I sure am glad I did not fall for this…used common sense, it is good to put this stuff out there for people to be aware.

  7. ALMOST got scammed..Craigslist …a Tractor for $2500 in Montana, free shipping to TN (her brother was suppose to work for shipping co)…Tractor belonged to her Dad. The red flags went up when her “Google Checkout” wanted a “Wire Transfer” through Western Union. These scammers are very believable. Just remember the old saying:
“If it seems too good to be true…it is!”
Google Checkout never asks for Wire transfers….ever!

  8. Same deal. Nice featherlite horse trailer listed on craigslist in WY, but when asked where….it moved to Montana ready to be shipped. Scammer really pressed for shipping address and $$ through Google checkout..Scammer supposedly worked on a cruise ship and couldn’t be there to sell the trailer. Price was well below value and they would deliver it anywhere….All red flags.

  9. I almost fell for it, too…a 2006 Ford F150 FX4 for $6,200.00 listed in the Portland, OR Craigslist. “Chad Mountain” was selling it because his battalion was sent to Somalia, and the price was so low because he needed a quick sale before July 20th. The vehicle was packed and ready to go in Canton, OH, with all documents and photobucket.com link with photos of the vehicle. He wanted to proceed with a Google Checkout representative randomly selected by the company to handle our transaction…basically the same email as Chris (above) received on June 25th.
The Google Checkout email came from stating the payment must be submitted through electronic bank wire transfer to TD Bank in Delaware saying:

“Please reply to this email to confirm you have received the payment details.

Thank you for using our service,
    Google Checkout Financial Department!
Copyright © 2012 Google. All rights reserved. Designated trademarks and brands are the property of their respective owners.”

Really??? Frank Smith? And,grammatical errors in an email from Google…I don’t think so.

  10. Wow are we glad we googled craigslist scams. Today 7/7/2012 we were almost pulled in by this exact scam involving a Harley Davidson listed on craigslist. Our warning was the low price. The sellers story is that her son died two months ago and she just wanted to get rid of it. Free shipping also was offered with all the listed requirements put on this site warning. DO NOT FALL FOR THE HARLEY ON CRAIGSLIST!!!!!!! I sure hope this saves someone asap from falling for this scam. REMEMBER IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT PROBABLY IS

  11. Thats funny Chad Mountain tried seeling me a 2004 Audi A4 Quattro for $2350, I knew it was a scam cuz the price was so low. What was sad was the story they use to try and make you feel sorry. This so called Chad Mountain says his son and his fiance where hit in another car by a drunk driver and killed and he just wants to sell his car because it brings to many bad memories. He listed the car in Grand Rapids, MI and hes from Virginia.

  12. I was looking for a new car on craigslist when i came across this nice 01 blue dodge. The seller didn’t leave any info on the truck so i contacted her via email. She went on to tell me that she was the only owner of the truck and it had only 47,000 miles on it, and the reason she was selling was she is in the military and is about to be deployed next wednesday. I talked to my dad about it and im glad he did his reaserch about google checkout because he found this article. Afterwards i got more emails from this Rachelle Russell telling me how the google checkout process worked and how she wouldnt recieve the money untill I okayed it, kinda like in the story earlier. Then in every email after that she kept pressing me for my name and address so she could start the google checkout process.

  13. Can this process work in the opposite direction if you are the seller: I am selling a small vehicle on a local Craigs listing and I promptly received an email that is not very well written, telling me that the person trusts my representation of the condition of stated vehicle and is willing to pay the asking price. He wants to know where the vehicle is and tells me I must use the google checkout to sell it and ship it to him, although he will not tell me who he is, where it is going, or provide a phone # to reach him to cover details re: vehicle. I have never used google checkout, but I am concerned about providing personal checking account information – if requested – for the deposit of funds by the seller. Any thoughts, history, pointers. SPS

    1. Thanks for reaching out! Of course– this is definitely something that can happen in the opposite direction in the case that you are the seller. Google checkout has a reporting page just for the sellers to report possible scams, and it’s super helpful.

      -Alyssa

  14. I was looking for a decent car for a good price. This guy by the name of Sgt. Hill S. Of Washington was selling an 04 Toyota camry. I researched and found it was a $10,000 car. The guy claims to be stationed in Athens, Greece and is deploying on July 29th to Afganistan, so he needs to sell fast. The vehicle is in a military base in Washington where I can not go so it must be shipped through military transportation means. Also claims to be in the Air Force. He continues to stress that we must use Google checkout. He really doesn’t care how much I pay but wants $1800. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. This site definitely helped! If there is a way to track him down I can give you his information he gave me. Thank you.

  15. Watch out for this scam: two jet skies for about 10,000 less than their worth. When asked where to look at them, you get the same old song and dance, “I’m pregnant and cannot meet you in person” ..Just send the money. HA!!

  16. This is a scam and people need to know about this. This is so wrong and people need to be aware of this. Let’s stop this from happen to others.

  17. This scam I almost fell for but when I wanted to pick up the car instead of using Google checkout she gave me a number I called and she insisted we use Google checkout and then hung up PLEASE DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM!

    “Hey,

I have a low price for my 2006 Nissan Altima ($ 2,350 including delivery to your home address ), because I want to sell the car very quickly. My husband died 2 months ago (he had a heart attack) and this vehicle brings me bad memories and that’s the reason that I want to sell it. I along with my daughter decided to sell the house and we moved to my sister in Nebraska. Unfortunately I can’t conclude this transaction personally because my work involves a lot of traveling but I left everything prepared for the sale. If you are really interested in purchasing, please email me with your details (name and address) for the shipping.

    Thank you Linda Miller”

  18. “Selling 2×2007 SEA-DOO SUPERCHARGED RXP AND RXT W/TRAILER – $5000” on local Craigslist site(s). After several emails and review of photos (no licensing on the sides of the jet skis and the license plate blurred out) and a then a Google search for “Craigslist Scam Involving Google Checkout”, that sounded exactly like what I was hearing via email only from the scammer. These people should be arrested!!!! If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Be leery there are a lot of crooks out there trying to take your hard earned money.

  19. I’m asking Helen Berry, a seller of 2 ATV’s on Craiglist, about the 4 wheelers she has for sale. They were listed in the Austin locale but after I initially wrote for more pics, she said they were in Chicago. She had just divorced, moved and must sell them and would only do so through Google Checkout.
I said that I would drive up to get them but she is insisting that her contract with Google checkout allowed her to ship all over the US at no cost to the buyer…
I asked for the VIN #’s or a copy of the titles, response was a cut and paste about the divorce again and using Google Checkout.
Looks like this is a candidate for fraud….

  20. So this is strange. We are selling car speakers and sub woofers etc. and this guy contacts us saying he’s fine with our price he’ll take care of pickup and delivery we just need to use google checkout for this purchase…so people are now doing it to sellers….not sure how it works …maybe they end up with the equipment and they take their money back????? I only deal in face-to-face and they also need to call me not just send me a text messege. Be smart people…scams are everywhere….

  21. Yes I almost fell for the same scam in buying 2003 ford truck for my son. Sacramento-Area Seller, Alexandra Brunson. Upon researching and googling the sellers name I found out that she was from CA but going to school in Missoula and arrested on 3 felony drug charges….Do they have computers in jail??? The red flag for me was she spelled the word below wrong in her email to me and the google check out spelled the word the same wrong way….So glad for this site and that I researched more. Thanks you saved me from a scam!!!!!

  22. Well, I almost fell for this too but THANK YOU for all the posts about Google checkout. Here is the email I received about the car:

“Please take a few moments and read my email carefully, I know it is long, but I will explain all the details about the car and the transaction.
At the moment I’m stationed in Athens, Greece making final preparations before deploying to Afghanistan.
The car is already at our Military Logistic Department in Fort Lewis, Washington Army base, crated and ready to go. The Logistic Department will deliver the car to your home. The shipping is free for you. Since the car is in a military base, with no access you can not go there and take it, only the Logistic Department can deliver it, because it is in their custody. Shipping will take 3-4 business days to the destination. All documents you need for ownership, manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the car.
For the payment I would like to use Google Checkout as a third party. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the car and will release it to me after inspection period is over and you agree to keep it. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the car before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 10 days to inspect it. If you decide not to keep it Google Checkout will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back will be my concern. But I assure you won’t be the case. I think this is more than fair for both of us.

I’ll start the official procedure, and Google Checkout will contact you about this you’ll receive important guidelines + instructions from them. You ll be contacted by Google Checkout in the next 4 hours. So just e-mail me and tell me if you received the payment invoice and how long will take till you proceed with the payment as Google Checkout instructed you.

    PLEASE NOTE!
If the car is not how I’ve described it, you have the unequivocal right to refuse acceptance of the car (return postage on my expense) and you are entitled to a full and complete refund of the car’s purchase price. It will be insured during transportation and will be delivered in front of your door.
Again I want to point out that because I am going to Afghanistan. this sale is my top priority and I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible.

Hope to do business with you soon!”

  23. I have been looking for a car and I have found 7 different scams. Trying to use Google checkout or even eBay all have free shipping and are not local anymore for different reason. So glad that y’all have this up. Thanks so much for confirming what I thought was too good to be true.

  24. Thank you for sharing this info, I was almost out $2127.00. I had already had the money at Western Union, but I had this bad feeling in my gut that something was wrong, and so I Googled Google checkout, because that’s who he said would handle the money and I came across this site, and everything that was posted he stated to me. Nice car and price was way below value and that he was about to be deployed to Afghanistan. I was about to send the trans code, but then I saw where he kept asking “did u send the money yet“, kinda of eagerly. I did send the trans code to the Google receipt email but then I just called Western Union and they cancelled the transaction. I get to pick my money up tomorrow. Always listen to your gut.

  25. This is great. The e-mail I received is word for word the same as Tiffany. I was hoping to get a 2006 Honda Accord for $1950. I wanted to make sure it wasn’t a scam before I put the money in Google Checkout so I Googled it and saw this site. I wish it wasn’t a scam but at least I didn’t spend all my $$ on a car I’ll never get. Thanks

  26. I am a seller in the middle of a reverse Google Checkout scam right now. I am selling a small sailboat. The buyer contacted me within an hour of my post and said she, Lismoore321, would buy it sight unseen. I would need to use Google Check Out and provide her my address so she could arrange shipping. She claims she will deposit the asking price plus the shipping cost into my Check Out account, but I first need to wire, via Western Union, the shipping price to a Shirley in Tigerton WI. Thanks to Google Map I took a walk down the street in Tigerton and found a 232 Birch Sreet to be a Post office, there is no shipping company. I have emailed her back stating I will not wire money, and the pick up needs to be local at the boat landing. She is persistent, with follow up emails, claiming she is not a fraud, and I just need to wire the money to verify my account. I was even sent an email by a “Go0gle customer service rep” domain: michjulian12@gmail.com, confirming the necessity of the Google transfer. Thanks to Googles tip about clicking “Show Original” in Gmail I was able to see it was not from Google.

Google Wallet has verified my account, and there is no deposit.

She has also called my cell with a cell phone that is registered to her in Escandida, CA when I answered it was electronic static.
I’ve reported this to Google, Craigslist, my bank, my credit card company and the police. If we are vigilant perhaps we can get sites like Craigslist, which are a very good idea, cleaned up and safe again. Thanks to everyone who has posted, it has helped me to understand what I was in the middle of.

  27. They try and get alot of ppl in different kind of ways!

“I have a low price for my 2006 Nissan Altima ($ 2,350 including delivery to your home address ), because I want to sell the car very quickly. My husband died 2 months ago (he had a heart attack) and this vehicle brings me bad memories and that’s the reason that I want to sell it. Unfortunately I can’t conclude this transaction personally because my work involves a lot of traveling but I left everything prepared for the sale. If you are really interested in purchasing, please email me with your details (name and address) for the shipping.”

  28. I almost fell for this but researched and found several sites saying this is a scam. Saved myself from losing 2000 dollars! I did give them my name address and phone number before I knew better. What should I watch out for and who all can I report them to?

    1. Yachanna–

Keep an eye on your credit cards and also your credit. Get your credit checked by one of these credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. 29. My husband was in the market for a motorcycle and found two on craigslist that sparked his eye. They were priced way below market value and the scammers only wanted to ship them free of charge. One scammer gave us the story of her son passed away and this motorcycle was his and it brings back too many bad memories having it there. The other scammer from Las Vegas was claiming his son had passed away and needed to get rid of his cycle quick, “and fortunately money is no object.” While he was reading me these replies I knew the stories sounded way too similar and too good to be true. I am so fortunate to have found this blog and hear that this is a scam before he gave out any information. It is so sad that people would stoop that low saying a family member has died to rip people off.

  30. I almost fell for it.
I guess when it is to good to be true it is.
The google check out really threw me for a loop.
Thank goodness I read more into it.
Thank you to everyone who posted on here : )

This is note I got first:
    “Hi,
Thank you for contacting me regarding my 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac.
100,000 miles on the clock, like new condition, no scratches, no dents, accident-free, clear title. There are no lien or loan on the truck and I’m the registered owner with the title in hand. You will receive all the documents, including the title signed over to your name.
As you probably noticed, the price is rather low: $2,400. Unfortunately I have a personal problem and I need the money ASAP.
The truck is located in Lemont, IL in my garage. My brother is a DAS employee and can deliver the truck anywhere in the US. The shipping is already paid for. You will have the truck in front of your house in 2 days. You will also have 5 days to inspect the vehicle. If, by any reason, the truck is not as described, or if you find any problems with it, I will pay for the returning fees. I’m sure it won’t be the case because it’s a state of art vehicle inside and out.

Please let me know if you want to reserve the truck for you.

    Thanks,
    Jennifer K.”

    This is second email:

“If you want to buy the truck here is my post on Google Checkout  http://google.checkout-cg.com/veh.storeID928735/store.php?ssid_w83nt69f6qthajz&&verified_seller=true&&p=store&&dmpt=US_Vehicles .
The transaction will be fully under Google’s surveillance, giving us both security and insurance since they offer the highest rate of safety and reliability during online transactions.
They are responsible for the security of this transaction and you have nothing to be worried about. Don`t worry this transaction is legit and all your funds are fully insured by their company.
You will have a period of 5 days for inspection as I told you in my first email. The inspection period start from the moment when the truck is delivered at your address.
I think 5 days is enough for you to make a decision if you keep the truck or not. If you won’t like my truck then you notify Google Checkout and send it back on my cost.

    Thanks,
    Jennifer K.”

  31. Our conversation:

“Like I’ve told you, the delivery process is payed by me and I want to finish this deal through Google Checkout  because they are a biggest company and we can both be protected and insured.
You will receive the trailer  in max 2-3 days and you will get the chance to inspect it 5 days , test drive it and everything you like.  The trailer  will be delivered directly to your requested address as soon as I will have the payment confirmation from Google Checkout . Google Checkout  will hold the money until you will receive , inspect and decide if you want to keep the trailer .If you will find the smallest problem with the trailer  you will ship it back on my expense .
If you’re interested to purchase just email me with your full name ,shipping address and your phone number , so I can notify Google Checkout  that you are selected as my buyer and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure.
I await your email with the requested details so we can move forward.”

The camper is in Louisville, KY in case it gets sold I will take care of shipping. I can’t conclude this transaction personally because my work involves a lot of traveling, the camper is already at the shipping company, shipping cost is included in price.

  32. Hello, don’t be fooled by these scammers. My husband almost sent $2,400 for a ford ranger and received the same letter that her son died and she didn’t want to look at the truck anymore. Very suspicious emails asking for the money to be sent right away. Then the next email sent has a different name and not my husbands on it. They called him Melvin. Please buy locally on Craigslist so you can actually go look at what your purchasing.

  33. Jennifer K. is a scammer. She almost got us for all the money we have. Thanks to all of you, she didn’t get away with it. People like her make it hard for the good people.

  34. Just found one on Craig’s list, received my second email about the google checkout Honda 03 cbr 600 for $1650, you can see it listed in almost every major city

  35. I’ve heard all those stories! I knew it sounded weird and crazy but I must warn u all! Don’t trust MARY H, JENNIFER V, ISABELLA D, SUSAN H! They all use sob fib stories to get your money!

  36. They just got my daughter for $2100.00 wired for the same truck. I tried to warn her. Cant the FBI internet crimes unit stop these thieves?

  37. They got me for $2,000… selling 2008 Jet Skies. All the same story…. need to sell quickly, husband recently passed away, being deployed etc.. I feel like such a dumb ass for falling for this. I guess that is what happens to people who trust other people. Don’t know why they can’t catch people like this.

  38. Hi, I also am selling some furniture on Craigslist. 1st I let emails come in and I was getting the same thing people saying they were happy with the condition and wanted to send payment to either PayPal or Google checkout. They would have a shipper come and get it cuz they live out of town. Now I put on it that it was being sold locally and there would be no shipping. After emailing lots of times back and not getting the answers that I was asking, I took my item off. Now, I have put it back on after 3weeks later, with no emails (calls only) and we have gotten texts saying some of the same things. I am totally not giving out my personal info. and if these people can not call and talk personally I am not selling to them. I hope I doing the right thing now that I have seen all these Scams going on.

  39. I think I almost got taken!! Thank you so much for this site and all of the comments!!!! My husband and I are looking for a camper and found what appears to be an affordable one and a really nice one on Craigslist! $2380 and will delivery to me at his expense in 2-3 days and I can keep it, drive it and use it for 5 days before the money is taken from Google Checkout, “because it’s the largest and safest way to make the transaction for both of us”!! I just emailed the gentleman about coming myself to Indiana to look at this camper since I’m off work this week and I do have family there.. Waiting on his reply now!! Again, I am THANKFUL for this site!!!!

Ok, before posting this comment, I checked my email… He’s responded…. “I have listed the item with Google checkout because I am always out of town and not near a phone or the camper. Please send me your complete address, telephone number, first and last name and I will send it to Google checkout so they will know that you’re my selected buyer.” So, yep.. I think this is one of the hoaxes going around!! Just saved me my savings!!

  40. Thank goodness we didn’t fall for this one:

“First of all I have to tell you that I can’t use the phone due the military security reasons I’m restricted from leaving the unit’s facility under any purpose and have strictly limited phone access. I hope you can understand that we will have to stick to email for now. Right now I’m in a military base of Pennsylvania National Guard. The vehicle is here with me at the base but I’ve already made all the arrangements with DAS to pick it up from the base. The title will be sent with the car. I think the car will be in 3-5 days to your address. I will take care of shipping charges. I will send all necessary paperwork (clear title, bill of sale, user’s manual, pink slip etc). Regarding the payment I want to use Google Checkout protection program. You’ll get 5 days to inspect and test drive after delivery. During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money. Once you inspect and decide to keep the car, will confirm your decision with Google and only then they will re-route me the money. In this way we are both protected.
I need to know if you are interested in buying it so I can ask Google to send you the details on how this works. I have to fill out a form on Google and I need the name that will go on the title and an address where you want the car delivered. Once I do it, Google will email you all the details on this transaction and we can get the ball rolling.”

  41. Im glad I found this website before I sent any money but what do I do if I already gave my name and info to a “Sgt. Lewis Hill” and im worried that I will be getting more emails or be a victim of identity fraud or something….HELP!!!

  42. i found rv on craigs list. its on the dallas/fort worth page. They are giving me all the indicators that u menstioned in your page. The test or check it out time of 7 days, its in another state so on and so on. i have been emailing but have not exchanged anymore then an email address. i am not going to email anymore and am worried can they get into any info about me. identity theft. please help.

  43. I replied to an ad about a 2006 Jayco Wildwood Camper $2300 8/13/2012

I was stupid enough to give her my e-mail address and cell phone #
I got a letter back from her that said the RV is in storage and they would ship it to my address with no shipping. She said that Google Checkout would keep the money on hold for the 7 day testing period. “She wants me to e-mail her my full name and shipping address so she could notify Google Checkout that you are my buyer and they will contact you” So I called my son and he checked this out and said that they are scammers and I had already gave them too much information. So what do I do now?

  44. My boyfriend and I have received several emails like these and they are deff scams! I am writing down all posting id numbers and details of the emails and reporting them to the fraud page on Craigslist. I encourage everyone who has ran into these scams to do the same so we can get rid of these scammers. We all work hard for our money as these scammers are taking advantage of us.

    “Hello,

This 2004 Chevy Avalanche 4×4 runs and drives excellent. It has been extremely well maintained with a full service history, 70.000 miles! The transmission is Automatic, shifts smoothly and the 4×4 operates perfectly. The interior is all original. The truck has all of its original floor mats, all books, complete set of tools and keys. Everything works in the truck lights, gauges, radio, seats, windows, locks, a/c blows ice cold, etc… clear title free of liens. I bought it when i was serving in Fort Lewis, U.S. Army base in Washington and now I am deployed in Athens, Greece. The truck will be delivered for free from WA, US. I have dropped my price to $1,900 (purchase price) since this is an Urgent Sale! and I need to sell it before September 01st, when I will be deployed in Afghanistan with my platoon replacing the troops scheduled to come home. If you’re interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner email me your: Full Name and Shipping address, to open a case with Google Checkout. They will contact you to explain the entire procedure. The financial part will be managed by them, which means that you will have a 10 days inspection period before committing to buy the truck. In this way both, buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction. Hope to hear from you soon! SSgt Allen Carter”

  46. same as above:

“Please take a few moments and read my email carefully, I know it is long, but I will explain all the details about the truck and the transaction.
At the moment I’m stationed in Athens, Greece, making final preparations before deploying to Afghanistan.
The truck is already at our Military Logistic Department in Fort Lewis, Washington Army base, crated and ready to go. The Logistic Department will deliver the truck to your home. The shipping is free for you. Since the truck is in a military base, with no access you can not go there and take it, only the Logistic Department can deliver it, because it is in their custody. Shipping will take 3-4 business days to the destination. All documents you need for ownership, manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the truck.
For the payment I would like to use Google Checkout as a third party. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the truck and will release it to me after inspection period is over and you agree to keep it. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the truck before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 10 days to inspect it. If you decide not to keep it Google Checkout will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back will be my concern. But I assure you won’t be the case. I think this is more than fair for both of us.

If you wish to proceed with the purchase, please provide me your full name, address (street, city, zip, state) and phone # so I can initiate the deal through Google Checkout. They will contact you soon with all the details you need about the payment and shipping.

    PLEASE NOTE!
If the truck is not how I’ve described it, you have the unequivocal right to refuse acceptance of the truck (return postage on my expense) and you are entitled to a full and complete refund of the truck’s purchase price.

  47. I have a vehicle for sale but this buyer says he will pay for it sight unseen, full price, only with Google checkout, and send the money. He would pay for a shipper to pick it up. What is his recourse, can he get his money back and scam me? This is a legitimate deal and a fair price.

    1. We have reached out to our investigators to provide some tips on how to know when Google Checkout is safe. Stay tuned, but anytime you are not comfortable with a transaction we suggest not going through with it.

  48. I’m looking into this car on Google checkout after reading this is getting me kind of worried. I’m a college and looking for a car and i thought this 2003 Nissan Altima would have been good but i guess not..

  49. We were victims of the Google check out scam. I wish we would have read up on Google checkout. We made the mistake of giving info and money and lost everything to the person selling a 2006 trailer. I feel like such a fool that we let them pull one on us. That money was our savings. How stupid we feel. If anyone knows if we can do anything please respond.

  50. I have the same issue as “Corinthian” that was posted on 8/17/12. I have a van for sale on Craigslist. Someone responded to my ad via text message and said they want to buy the van based on the pictures on Craigslist. They live in another state and want to use Google checkout to pay me. I’m sure this is a scam, but I can’t figure out what the alleged buyer is trying to do. Can anyone heelp me with this?

  51. I am SO glad I just looked this up because it didn’t sound right to me…the person who emailed me is going by the name “Amanda Graham”.I knew something was crazy about it when I saw the price & was told that she/he wanted to sell it immediately because her husband died so she and her daughter up and moved to Pennsylvania (I believe) & when I asked to see the vehicle before purchasing, I was told that she wouldn’t be able to handle the transaction because her job requires lots of traveling but she left it with someone to complete the transaction.ANYWAY thanks for this post!

    Hello,
Thank you for your interest in purchasing my car. It is in perfect condition, with no scratches on it, no damage. Everything about this car functions perfectly. If you are interested in buying, the price is CAD $ 3,500.
I work in the army and I was transferred to the APO AE 09459, United Kingdom so I can’t use it anymore and I’ve decided to sell it. The car is currently stored in a warehouse near CFB Cold Lake, AB and I must pay a daily fee for storing so I priced it low to sell it fast. I’ll handle the shipping, so this will be free of charge for you.
The transaction will be done through Google Checkout for our own protection, no money first to me. Your funds will be 100% insured until you will receive and inspect the car, and I will be sure that I will receive the payment.
You will have 10 days from the time you receive the car to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not.
If you want to buy my car then e-mail me:
    Full name for the title,
    Shipping address
As soon as I have this information I’ll start the official procedure, and they will notify you about this. You’ll also receive important guidelines + instructions from them (please go through them exactly).
Looking forward to hearing from you,
    Sarah Mitchell

  53. I have report the above to the antifraudcentre.ca
This car was listed on Autotrader (2005 Toyota Corolla S last week.

The above matched your description so exactly I had to post it as a warning.

Just received it today from mitchells.sarah@gmail.com

    Forewarned is forearmed.

  54. I knew when I saw the 2005 Audi A6 for $2700 it was a total scam. Exact same story as the ones listed above. The milatary base and car were supposidly in Alaska. They even sent me a carfax on the car. Since I work for a dealer I ran the vin myself and found the carfax they sent me was actually correct except for at the end where it shows the car was sold at auction in Pennsylvania on 08/10/12. My curiosity is how did they get the carfax and the VIN for the car. Could it be a scam linked together with the auction outfit. Weird. Since all they have is my e-mail address and no further info is that anything to be concerned with?

    1. Matt, if you’re concerned about them having your email address two things you should do are:
      1) Beware of phishing emails requesting further personal information from you

      2) Make sure you’re signed up for our service with that email, and if we find it online through our fraud detection service we’ll alert you

  55. Think we were just taken for a ride. They have our addresses and my name and both emails. UGH!!! I went against everything I knew better. I let my husband talk me into this and now I honestly believe we just got screwed. Just what we needed, now we will be short getting vehicles and it was money from his grandmother we lost.

  56. I am the one selling an item and just gave e-mail, address and cell number. What should I do to protect from ID theft?

  57. Is there anyting I can do to get my money back? I think I just got scammed also. I have a lawyer and a contact in the FBI.

  58. I believe I almost fell victim to the same thing. The car was a 1967 Chevy Camaro in N. Dakota and the person was Senior Airman Daniel Riviera. He used the same old speech about the car being in a storage container ready to be shipped and that we would use google checkout to complete the transaction. The worst part is that he actually called me and we spoke on the phone for about an hour. Shortly after I decided to google “google checkout car sales” and this site came up. I immediately emailed him back and told him to cancel the transaction. He does however have my name, number and address. I hope he does not try and do any identity theft, lukily I have a service that watches for that currently.

    Hi,
Thank you for contacting me regarding my 03 Nissan Altima .
56,8175 miles on the clock, like new condition, no scratches, no dents, accident-free, clear title. There are no lien or loan on the car and I’m the registered owner with the title in hand. You will receive all the documents, including the title signed over to your name.
As you probably noticed, the price is rather low: $1,900. Unfortunately I have a personal problem and I need the money.
The car is located in Deerfield Beach, FL in my garage. My brother is a DAS employee and can deliver the car anywhere in the US. The shipping is already paid for. You will have the car in front of your house in 2 days. You will also have 5 days to inspect the vehicle. If, by any reason, the car is not as described, or if you find any problems with it, I will pay for the returning fees. I’m sure it won’t be the case because it’s a state of art vehicle inside and out.

If you want to buy the car here is my post on Google Checkout http://[url removed]
The inspection period start from the moment when the car is delivered at your address.
I think 5 days is enough for you to make a decision if you keep the car or not. If you won’t like my car then you notify Google Checkout and send it back on my cost.
The car is located in Deerfield, FL in my garage.

    Thanks,
    Brian Anderson

They have my name, mailing address, email address and phone number. They don’t have my money. I googled the information before going thru with transaction. I hope I have not caused any damage by giving them my info. The car for sale started on Craigslist and once I contacted them thru email, the ad disappeared off Craigslist. I should have known.

  60. See this one below. He only has my email address. Will increase my financial security just in case. I also flagged the listing.

  61. I just had a similar situation happen to me. The e-mail was sent through a person named Debbie ******, ******@gmail.com. I’ve read other posts and she used much of the similar language as others have witnessed in their scam. Just today, someone from Ghana sent me a friend request on Facebook. I have no idea who the person is, but I believe there’s a connection. The person has my address, name, and number, but I didn’t go through with the transaction. What can I do to protect myself now?

  62. We found this 2007 Tritoon Playcraft Sport Cruise Pontoon Boat for sale for $3,900. They want me to use Google Checkout. They now have my e-mail and home address and cell phone number. What do I do. I have not sent them any money. The boat is in Boise, ID nd the Google Checkout is in San Antonio. How do I make sure they do not obtain my identity?????

  63. almost got took. the last reply a got sounded fishy so I investagated Google Checkout and found this site. sounds exactly like the discription. THANKS.
The add was for a John Deere tractor.

  64. Ad on craigslist said they had a 2003 mastercraft X2 wakeboard for $4570. Boat in excellent condition and runs perfect. (Pictures were of a beautiful boat) Listed all the extras. She said her husband passed a few months ago and she needed to sell fast. The boat was listed in Florida but then she said the boat was in Idaho. Wanted me to pay on google checkout like the others listed here. Said it was at a shipping yard and ready to be shipped. I just remembered the old rule if it seems to good to be true. Thank God I found this site or I would have been really sick. Good luck everyone.

  65. We just feel victim to this scam! I’m so upset because I knew it was to good to be true. We actually were looking on Craigslist to purchase a car and found what my husband and I thought was a great deal. The lady said that her husband had recently passed away and that her and her daughter wanted to sell the car because it brought bad memories. She told us to use google checkout and even received emails from google checkout stating the trial period etc. Going against our better judgement we fell for it and sent the money. I’m just so upset that we were just scammed for $2100. I’m a teacher and don’t have money to just give away like that. Is their anything that can be done to get this money back?? Please help!!

  66. This guy tried it again this morning i googled it was vrery strange that he would have packed it up already and had prepaid $1000 in shippong cost So i googled and I found your site

    Hi again Mike,

I sealed the Mustang in an US Air Forces warehouse at Grand Forks AFB in North Dakota. It’s ready to be
shipped and a truck service I have arranged will deliver it to your place (the shipping cost is on me). The delivery will be door-to-door, at your exact location, so you will not have to pick it up from somewhere else.

So we will be using Google Checkout as a supervisor for the transaction. Basically they will monitor the entire process. They will secure the payment and they will also supervise the shipping process and the paper exchange. The vehicle will come with all the papers including the title, service history and a bill of sale signed by me. Once you get the vehicle and finish with the inspection if you want to keep it you can contact Google Checkout and authorize the payment so that they can release it to me…

If the Mustang is not suitable for you for any reason, your funds will be fully refundable and I will take the vehicle back on my cost. But I’m sure it won’t be the case because as I said it’s a state of art looking and working machine. Anyway, you will have 5 days from the time you receive the vehicle to arrange an independent inspection and decide if you want to keep it or not.

So if you wish to proceed just shoot me and email with your name and address, a phone # where you can be reached and I will initiate the deal through Google Checkout. I will give you a phone call before starting the transaction, just to make sure we are both on the same page.

    Kind regards,
    Senior Airman Daniel Rivera
    319th Logistics Readiness Squadron
    Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota

  67. the same thing happened to me with the 2003 Nissan Altima. The post is back up on craigslist (actually twice). Craigslist has removed one but no the other. My communication with the alleged owner Brian Anderson was almost identical to that of Worried in TN

  68. i too have come across this scammer. and i let him know he was caught. they said they were a woman nmed sarah who was deaf and just lost her husband. its so sad that people are so ignorant

  69. The above was in regards to a 2001 Honda Accord on craiglist. That was my email response to the seller. Be careful. If its to good to be true then don’t go for it. Person was asking for 995 and it include shipping and shipping back if i didn’t want. So be careful.

  70. The same thing just happened to me with a 1999 Jeep Cherokee. I too gave him my name, email address cell phone number and name I hope nothing happens, I’m glad I read this.

  71. THIS HAPPEN TO ME YESTERDAY I HOPE THIS CAN HELP
LOOK OUT FOR STAFF SGT DAVID JEFERSON IN CRAIGLIST

Sir, the truck is located in Grafton Nd and was posted in few states for a fast sale.
If you are interested to buy the truck, all I need from you to open a case at Google Checkout is just: your name, full shipping address and phone number and I will forward them to Google Checkout Support and they will contact you with more information about payment and insurance. Google will contact me and I will release the shipping of the truck to you ( the shipping cost is included and will take 3-4 days). After you receive it you will have 5 days for inspection and test drive. They will not release me the money until you receive the truck and inspect. If you will not keep it the money will be refunded to you ($2.500) and the truck shipped back to me. I hope I resolved everything and this transaction will go smoothly for both of us.

    Thank you, Sgt. David Jefferson

  72. there a scam on craigslist where a guy claiming to be mike jones is selling a very nice looking chevy silverado for way way under blue book value he stated hes an oceanoghrapher its a scam dont reply cause where you gonna find a silverado ss pickup for 2500.00 i almost got scammed but thank GOD i didnt sent the money so watch out and go with your instinct when you find something that seems to good to be true and wanted to use google checkout so BUYER BEWARE OF SCAMS THAT APPEAR TO GOOD TO BE TRUE

    JOHN IN COLO

  73. I almost fell for one of the same scams. In the service truck is already crated ready to ship. They have to sell fast becasue they are being deployed. These people need to be prosecuted for their deception but for posing as a Military person that is trying t steal from honest people) more than anything. I received an e-mail and they said they were apx 4 hours form my home. When I tol them that I had a good frienf that was a Retired Colonel and he was at that location all the time the e-mails stopped fast.

  74. I have the opposite going on. A buyer (using the name of a famous professional poker player) wants to buy an item I listed on Craigslist using Google Checkout. Didn’t haggle price, replied within minutes of my posting asking if item was still available. Claimed he couldn’t pick up the item but would PAY me via Google Checkout if I would just give him my personal info so he could arrange for a shipping company to pick it up. Didn’t like the smell of the ‘too good to be true’ or his poor grammar and told him to Paypal me the money which he rejected.

I’m only sorry I gave him my paypal name and a real email address to reply to…

  75. I’m suppose to be getting a Nissan Altima from a lady who moved to Nebraska with her sister after her husband died two months ago & after reading this I’m scared. What sha’ll I do bout sending the moneygram? The car was on sale for 2350 a Nissan Altima with almost 60,0000 something miles.

  76. I am aware of this scam and have been looking further into it. Just as described…

“VIN: 5TELU42N36Z249208. Please take a few moments and read my email carefully, I know it is long, but I will explain all the details about the truck and the transaction. At the moment I’m stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington base making final preparations before deploying to Afghanistan.

So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the truck before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 10 days to inspect it. I’ll start the official procedure, and Google Checkout will contact you about this. If you are interested in buying it just mail me back with:
    – Your Full Name – Required by Google Checkout (You’ll receive important guidelines + instructions from them.)
    – Your Shipping Address and Phone Number – Required by the Logistic Department (They will call you with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day ahead so you can communicate what time schedule work best for your to receive the truck)

Again I want to point out that because I am going to Afghanistan this sale is my top priority and I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible.

Thanks, hope to do business with you soon!”

I also asked for a picture of the title and have received one????

  77. Is still available and has 48,260 MILES and automatic transmission.2004 Volkswagen Beetle GLS is excellent in every way, has no accidents reports, with no need for additional repairs and clear title.Anyway, thank you for your interest in buying the car. I am selling it at this final price $2,360 because my housband died 2 months ago (he had a heart attack) and brings me bad memories and that’s the reason I want to sell it asap.I along with my daughter decided to sell the house and we moved to my sister in Fort Collins trying to start a new life.I already have tones of emails so I hope you understand that I need to sort them out. Also, I take in consideration only those buyers who are really interested in buying the car, to be sure that I don’t waste my time with endless discussions. This way, I shall be assured of the serious intentions. So if you are interested please email me.

  78. And then here is the follow up email I got when I asked to see the car–way too fishy for me, then I found this site to confirm it. Unreal.

As I told you in my first e-mail, I am in Fort Collins, CO.Before leaving I had prearranged the deal with Google Checkout so my presence isn’t necessary. They will not give me any money until you receive and test the car .The car is at the shipping company, ready to be delivered. The shipping cost is included in the total price of the car!You have 7 days to test it and inspect the car. So if you want to make this deal I need the following details from you:
    -full name and address
    -shipping address
    -phone number
After I will have all this details I will forward them to Google Checkout and I will proceed the order. They will contact you with all the details that you need to complete this deal and also to see that i am covered by them and that I am legit seller. Waiting your email with the requested details.

  79. They give you a google wallet invoice. At first it looks very real until you get to the bottom and they use western union. And that’s when I realized that it was a scam.

  80. Good thing I found this site for my friend before he did something stupid!!!
Here is the e-mail he received from the scammer:

    – Your Full Name – Required by Google Checkout (You’ll receive important guidelines + instructions from them.)
    – Your Shipping Address and Phone Number – Required by the Logistic Department (They will call you with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day ahead so you can communicate what time schedule work best for your to receive the bike)

Again I want to point out that because I am going to Afghanistan this sale is my top priority and I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible.

Thanks, hope to do business with you soon!

  81. My girlfriend was in dire need of a vehicle. We found a used ford explorer sport for just 2000 bucks in pretty good condition and were about to purchase it but she got a response from a seller we had contacted on craigslist and decided to wait. Here is what the seller sent:

    “Hello,

This 2007 Acura TL runs and drives excellent. It has been extremely

well maintained with a full service history (ONLY 26,600).

Transmission is Automatic shifts smoothly . The interior is all

original. The car has all of its original floor mats, all books,

complete set of tools and keys. Everything works in the car lights,

gauges, radio, seats, windows, locks, a/c blows ice cold, etc… It

has no leaks or drips and does not smoke at all, slightly used in 100%

working and looking conditions with a clear title free of encumbrances

and liens. At the moment I’m stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base ,

Montana making final preparations before deploying to Afghanistan with

the U.S. Convoy. The car is here with me… but you don`t have to

worry because the shipping is free.
I have dropped my price to $2,550 (purchase price) since this is an

Urgent Sale! and I need to sell it before September 28th, when I will

be deployed in Afghanistan with my platoon replacing the troops

    scheduled to come home.
If you’re interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner

email me your: Full Name and Shipping address, to open a case with

Google Checkout. They will contact you to explain the entire

    procedure.
The financial part will be managed by them, which means that you will

have a 10 days inspection period before committing to buy the car. In

this way both, buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of

    this transaction.

  82. funny thing is she and i had just discussed a scam that was run 12 years ago on my ex-wife and her family. we both talked about how if its too good to be true it probably is..yadda yadda. Somehow though we found ourselves WANTING to believe that someone was selling a $14,000 car for $2500! lol! we went to bank to get 2000 out and i was going to get remaining money from another account of mine and then my spidey sense went off. i just couldnt comprehend why someone would sell a vehicle and take a $12,000 loss, no matter what the circumstance. then i thought about it would take 800 bucks to ship alone from Montana to where we live in Memphis. This is the instruction she got from the Seller after setting up the “Google Checkout case.” :

    “Case ID: 68554335
    Item – 2007 Acura TL

    Dear Jillienne Jeff,

To make the payment you need to go to a Western Union agency and ask the clerk to make the payment using the details we have sent. You will pay with CASH money. You also need to ask the clerk to use Western Union money transfer, not money order to make the payment. If the clerk will select the money transfer you will not need additional information than the ones you already have from us. The amount you have to transfer to our agent is $2,550 and $191 will be the Western Union fee. Be careful to make the payment in the name of our agent and not in seller’s name.

    Name: Albert Ingram
    Street: 148 County Road 75
    City/State: Hamilton, IN 46742
    Country: United States

After you have made the payment please send through fax the receipt from Western Union to Google Checkout Department at: +1-(866)-390-6582 and also send us an email with the following info from the Western Union receipt (sometimes the scanned receipts are very blurry and very hard to decipher):

-MTCN – 10 digits number from the payment receipt
    -Sender Name and Address
    -Receiver Name and Address
    -Amount

We will hold the payment until you send us your confirmation that you are satisfied with the product you received. As soon as we receive your confirmation we will release the payment to the seller. You will receive further details regarding the shipping process after the payment confirmation.

*NOTE It may occur that your e-mail doesn’t support HTML language and that is why you haven’t received the invoice from us. Please check your bulk/junk/spam/ messages, the invoice may have ended there because of the ever increasing filters of the e-mails nowadays.

    Thank you,
    Google Checkout Financial Department!”

  83. Once i took a second to think and just looked at it from an objective point of view it was plain to see it was a scam.
    A. The price is ridiculously low.
    B. They were willing to pay to ship it but not the 191 bucks to do the Western Union Transfer??
    C. The military story makes no sense. I was stationed at Ft Bliss years ago and they had a program where soldiers could buy and sell cars in event of deployment.
I could name several more but you all get the point. Moral of the story: if its too good to be true…tell them to go to hell and slap yourself for even considering it. lol

  84. Hello,

My 2000 Honda Accord LX with 60,332 miles is in excellent condition, never raced or abused,no accident,no loans,it has been very well maintained.I am selling it at this price ($1,910) because I just went through a divorce with my ex-husband and when it has finished, I remained the owner of this car. I have some financial problems right now, so I want to sell it asap and a fast sale can be done only at a low price. The transaction will be made through Google Checkout for the safety of both of us.

If you are really interested in purchasing the car please send me your full name, shipping address and your phone number.Google will notify you all the details about the shipping and payment.
I will appreciate an answer as soon as possible.

  86. Hi my name is on and I think I have been scammed I was looking into a Toyota Tacoma and I did send money since I never look into this topping what can I do about it I think I need help please

  87. Help! I am concerned about a fraudulant car sale from craigslist through google checkout. Luckily I didn’t wire money, but I gave personal information and don’t want to be the victim of identity theft. The fraudulent users is “caleb44emily@hotmail.com.” She claimed to have moved to Nebraska when her husband had a heart attack. I found the exact same letter on the internet listing a different car for sale. They asked that I wired money via moneygram to a Google Checkout agent named Jonathan Bridges 547 Cross Keys road, Sicklerville New Jersey 08081

  88. We where looking at an RV on craigslist and found it for $2855. We are from Texas and working in Alabama. I inquired about the RV and got a reply with “it was my sons and he passed away 3 months ago and it hurts to look at it” ect. And then proceeded to tell me everything that was mentioned above about grace period, google pay will hold the money, and so on. I immediately blocked the email coming back knowing that If i couldn’t look at the item, i don’t want it. I then found this site. Thank God I didnt fall for the scam.

  89. I work for a bank…just had a customer come in today…evidently Sgt. Lewis is both a military officer and a car dealer…here is how the scam proceeds for those of you who leave before the credits roll…once replying to Mr. Lewis with your personal information you are contacted by a fake version of google checkout that seems very convincing…to proceed you need to wire money to his account in greece that he claims is protected by google checkout…for those of you who dont know…once an international wire is sent it is irreversable and untraceable…your money is gone and so are your chances of receiving that rediculously cheap car

  90. THIS IS THE 1ST EMAIL HE/SHE SENT

    Hi,

The car is in perfect shape, never been smoked in, without scratches or dents, and it has never been involved in any kind of accidents. I legally own, free of any liens or loans, under my name. This was my child’s car and brings me a lot of memories that make me suffer and this is the reason for what I want to sell it as soon as possible. thank you very much, please keep in touch! ~Patrick Douglas

  94. him: Hi again,

As i said before the transaction is managed by Google Checkout for our protection.

    me: Hi Sally or Patrick…
I’m sory, but I don’t think that you read the previous email from me.
please read carefully and give me some answers to my questions.
    thank you

him: Please let me know if i can send your details to Google-checkout so we can start the transaction.
    (Sally is my wife)

    thank you
me: I’m sory Patrick, but seems that you’re not very kind in give me more details about the car and about sending my sister to see the car. I’m not such in a huge rush to buy something without seeing more pictures as i’ve ask you and without checking the car when I have there a person who can check it for me. you took off the only picture from gumtree very quick and that picture was completely irevelant.
please, if you realy have a car to sell, send me more pictures, let my sister to see the car and we can complete the transaction.

  95. ….I’ve realised after the the second e-mail that is not true anything, cuz he didn’t said anything about my propose to send someone to see the car. 🙂 thanks that you create this forum, now I’m conviced that I didn’t lost a huge BARGAIN:)!

  96. I wondered when the picture looked like a stock picture, instead of a used vehicle. Thought there might be a little damage he didn’t want to disclose. I didn’t know if the cost was far below market value, since I’ve never owned a truck. Only want one so I can stop pulling a trailer behind me for various events and chores.

When he started saying it was out of state, I tried to bow out, but he persisted. I wouldn’t purchase sight unseen, but wanted to know if this was a scam or if Google did, indeed, have this program in place. Glad to know my instincts were correct. I am sorry for those who got burned.

Thank you for getting back with me. Unfortunately, I have never had a truck, but need one for various dog carting and sledding events, so without a test drive I would not know if it would work for me. I am very petite, disabled and have mobility issues so it’s not a question of just hopping in and driving but whether it (or any vehicle for that matter) can be satisfactorily modified to make it work well and safely for me. I would love to help you out and the price sounds wonderful for a second vehicle, but without a test drive, I can’t do it. If for any reason it does get brought to Missouri soon and you need a buyer, I would love to work with you.

On behalf of myself, my family and my children, thank you for your service and sacrifice for our nation. May God Bless You and keep you safe.

The transaction will be fully under Google’s surveillance, giving us both security and insurance since they offer the highest rate of safety and reliability during online transactions. They act as a neutral third party. Look how this works:I will contact Google Checkout and give all the info about this deal. They will email us the forms which are needed for our deal(invoice, payment instructions, buyer’s and seller’s protection policy). You will send the money to Google Checkout and they will notify me to ship the vehicle (on my expense) to your location. After you will inspect the vehicle and decide to keep it, Google Checkout will forward the funds to me once you have approved them to do so.They will hold and insure your money until you will receive and test the vehicle.I need your name , shipping address and cell # so I can reserve the vehicle for you and register the transaction with Google Checkout and they will contact you with all the instructions step by step on how to complete the transaction.

  97. Hello! I inquired on a car before I read on this ad! Then I looked this up because obviously (it was too good to be true) I recieved an email from someone claiming her husband died and she just wants to sell his car..I recieved an email from the email: *****karen@hotmail.com.

My first idea of a scam was that I looked up her name on google..the only Karen S**** is in NJ. She told me in the email she is in LA…lol.

    Hope this saves someone

  98. I too have experienced this scam – I haven’t sent any money. My big turn off, came when I asked to speak to the person… left my phone number in 3 different emails…

My question is – how do we catch these people… How do we get them put away?

I could drag this out for at least 2-3 days if there is a way to track the emails…

  99. I am working, or trying to bid my time and find out more information on this 2010 Harley Fay Boy that ****@comcast.net has told me her son had it and died and now is selling it for $2400, it is worth at least $11,000. She said it was in Mongomery, AL and the shipping has been paid. When I asked If I could have a military buddy take a look at it and go to the local Harley shop to have it looked at. She responded by asking if I wanted the bike or not. And they wanted me to use Google Checkout, and then on the bottom it wanted me to send the money through Money Gram. I am not of course. I went back on Craigslist and it was not on there anymore, so I am guessing it had been removed.

  100. I was about to purchase the vehicle as well! Then I decided to check if Google Checkout was involved with any craigslist’s scams and to my surprise, it was very common!

    Hi again,
Please take a few moments and read my email carefully, I know it is long, but I will explain all the details about the car and the transaction.
The car is already at our Military Logistic Department in Fort Lewis,WA Army base, crated and ready to go. The Logistic Department will deliver the car to your home. The shipping is free for you. Since the car is in a military base, with no access you can not go there and take it, only the Logistic Department can deliver it, because it is in their custody.
All documents you need for ownership, manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the car .
For the payment I would like to use Google Checkout as a third party. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the car and will release it to me after inspection period is over and you agree to keep it. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the car before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 5 days to inspect it. If you decide not to keep it Google Checkout will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back will be my concern. But I assure you won’t be the case. I think this is more than fair for both of us.
To start the official procedure with Google Checkout I will need your complete name, shipping address and phone # and they will contact you about this you’ll receive important guidelines + instructions from them.
Feel free to call me anytime at 307-462-0676.
    PLEASE NOTE!
If the car is not how I’ve described it, you have the unequivocal right to refuse acceptance of the car (return postage on my expense) and you are entitled to a full and complete refund of the car ‘s purchase price. It will be insured during transportation and will be delivered in front of your door.
Again I want to point out that because I am going to Afghanistan. this sale is my top priority and I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible

  101. Thank you, AllClearID, for preventing me from falling for exact same scheme. Unfortunately, I didn’t read this till after I send my address and phone number. The scam was a military one with an air force nurse about to be deployed and needing to sell her VW Beetle ASAP. Google Checkout was supposed to be used, but I was to send money via Moneygram.
If it sounds too good to be true…

  102. You’ll notice the “agent” in these emails is almost always someone in the US? What you may not know is those “agents” answered ANOTHER Craigslist ad in the hopes of becoming someone’s administrative assistant, working from home, taking care of “invoices” and sending money to another country. This “agent” takes your $2550 and keeps $200-$300 for themselves and forwards the balance to another “agent” abroad who will keep some for their “service” and then they hand deliver the money (or sometimes deposit in a bank) to the scammer themselves. It’s a long chain and it’s easy to break but you can’t find all the links along the way.

  103. We were recently going to purchase a car out of state from a woman named Stephanie Walton based of out SC. She had a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4×4 listed for $2,500. Her story was so similar to all of these horror stories. She was divorced and just wanted to get rid of the car, too many bad memories. Her point of contact for a Western Union pick-up was Edmund Belaire in Seattle WA. We walked away from the sale as it was too shady. Buyers beware!!!!

  104. almost duped too!!
the scammers are using the same scam process on Craigslist, but now say that amazon will be the escrow holding the money in the forms of a gift card. you just have to send them a picture of the back of the card showing the numbers under the seal and a copy of the receipt. and they even send a nice invoice that looks like it came from amazon, except that when you call the 844 number the answering party will not give you any information. they will even email you a link to look at the trailer being sold on craigs list .and the invoice has a name and address where they say the trailer resides. same sob story , my mother needs the money to pay back money before they foreclose on her house.
